The Others, the story went, were created by the Children of the Forest to oppose the First Men. Eventually, they turned on the Children, forcing an alliance between the two warring factions to stop the monster the Children had created. This story is only partially true. In reality, the Others didn't turn on the Children of their own volition. The Children became careless, arrogant even. And so, a human, the 13th lord Commander of the Night's Watch, was able to gain control of the Others, becoming the Night King. It was he that led the Others against both the Children and humanity. And now, it was Euron Greyjoy who aimed to follow in his footsteps.

Euron had Rhaegal and Viserion scour the wall with flame. Jon Snow quickly saw that the battle was lost, and attempted to evacuate the Wall. Euron had one last trick, though. He blew the Horn of Joramun, which he had found with Samwell Tarly in Oldtown. And so it was that the wall came tumbling down. The Others were well and truly in Westeros.

While Hand of the Queen Eddard Stark quickly returned North to attempt to rally his people, King Consort Robb was supposed to join him with the bulk of the Royal army, augmented with Tyrell forces, but had to face another threat from the south. Daenerys Targaryen, married to Quentin Martell, had landed in Dorne. Doran Martell, or more specifically Oberyn Martell, however, took the threat of the Others seriously, due to the studies of his daughter Sarella Sand in the Citadel of Oldtown. Sarella was only barely able to escape the Crow's Eye's rampages, and so informed Oberyn and Daenerys of pressing concerns that necessitated all of humanity uniting. As such, Daenerys arranged a meeting with Hand of the Queen Tyrion Lannister in the beginning of 301 AC in order to agree on a truce. Although it was not clear at the time, it would b the beginning of the Targaryen Reconciliation.

Another "Targaryen" claimant, meanwhile, or more specifically his puppet master, was less selfless. On Dragonstone, Varys still had a plan for how Aegon Blackfyre could win the Iron Throne. He figured that the Others and Euron could only be defeated with dragons, and, looking over some of the Red Priestess Melisandre's writings, sacrificing one of royal blood would waken the stone dragons. The Priest Moqorro, in the company of Daenerys, had the same idea, and so Daenerys flew on the back of Dragon to Dragonstone, destroying the Royal Fleet of Selyse Baratheon. In response, Varys had the Golden Company men stage a coup, taking control of Dragonstone and imprisoning Selyse and Shireen. He planned to sacrifice Shireen Baratheon, which he would have done if not for Jon Connington. Connington(and Aegon himself) objected to sacrificing a child; while they were arguing with Varys, Harry Strickland of the Golden Company saw that the cause was lost, and revealed the truth to Aegon and Connington: Aegon was a Blackfyre. Connington, furious that his life was a lie, tackled Varys into the fire he had meant for Shireen. And thus, Varys Blackfyre was burned to death, waking the stone dragons. Thus, Daenerys Targaryen arrived on Dragonstone to the sight of a demoralized Golden Company, a scared but alive Shireen, a distraught Aegon, and two new dragons.

Humanity needed all the good news it could get, because the Others were running wild across the North. Euron sacked Last Hearth, Bear Island, and Karhold within a month, and then sacked the Dreadfort. There, he discovered Ramsay Snow, Roose Bolton's bastard. Upon seeing Ramsay's torture chamber for his servant Reek(the original Reek, as Then never sacked Winterfell) Euron reportedly asked mockingly"is this the best you can do" and cut out Ramsay's tongue, adding him to the new undead crew of the Silence

Eddard Stark, meanwhile, met up with the remnants of the Night's Watch at Winterfell, where he told Jon Snow a truth that would change history: Jon was in reality the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. The next day, Eddard Stark rode out into battle in a desperate stalling action against Euron Greyjoy to allow the Royal Army under his son to reach the north(which now included the armies of all Seven kingdoms plus Daenerys and her dragons, plus around half of the surviving Golden Company). He never returned; Euron had Rhaegal drop off his head in Winterfell. Thus, what Lyanna Stark said to her brother, and therefore whether or not Rhaegar raped her or they actually loved her, has been lost to history, a mystery that will never be solved.

Robb Stark, upon hearing the news, devised a strategy: he would ride ahead to Winterfell, using himself as bait, while the Westerosi army would take the Others from behind. Their only chance was to kill Euron, to make the Others disorganized and hopefully decisively defeat them. Thus, Robb, in the middle of 301 AC, made his last stand at Winterfell. When the Wights finally got past him, he was surrounded by their bodies; it is estimated that Ice cut down at least 150 of them that day. Euron marched triumphantly into Winterfell to find no one there; Jon Snow/Jaeherys Targaryen, as well as Catelyn, Area, and Rickon Stark(Sansa was a handmaiden for Myrcella and Brandon was a squire for Barristan Selmy) had evacuated. Euron let loose a cry of frustration.

It was then that the greatest cavalry charge in history took place. Every single knight of Westeros, hardened by years of battle, charged at the mass of Wights. Behind them, the largest host up to that point(though armies assembled in the Planetos War would exceed it) marched into battle. The decisive battle of the Second War for the Dawn had begun. Euron ordered his dragons to take flight, but they were opposed by the dragons that were awakened by Varys's(somewhat unwilling) sacrifice. Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen herself, atop Drogon, ravaged the horde of Wights. The human forces ended up fighting very few Others; the majority of them had entered Winterfell with Euron, which a special contingent of soldiers with dragonglass and Valyrian Steel weapons, led by Jon and including Barristan Selmy and Gerold Dayne, were storming. Thus, the Others were unable to add very many soldiers that they killed to their ranks.

The decisive moment of the battle came when Jon Snow, or Jaeherys Targaryen, the Prince that was Promised, met Euron Greyjoy in single combat. Euron made for a formidable foe with his Valyrian Steel armor, but eventually, while Jon was distracting him, he was cut down by Oberyn Martell, whose spear was able to find a weak point. With Euron's death, the Others lost all cohesion, returning to their status as mindless beasts. For the rest of the year, the Westerosi army would slowly retake the North, but there was no longer any doubt as to who would win. Now that warriors like Jon, Robb, and Barristan had won the war, it was up to Myrcella Baratheon to win the peace. Her reforms would prevent another civil war like what Westeros had just experienced for a long time.
If you think Myrcella I's reign has been rough so far, with the Dance of Three Stags, the Sixth Blackfyre Rebellion, Dany arriving in Westeros, and the Second Long Night, keep in mind that she hasn't been poisoned in front of her father (with her brain matter being splattered all over the ship).
